Create an emergency candle in a jiffy: Crisco isn’t just for baking

Candles are a household item that many people keep a supply of in the pantry, cupboard or in a bag already set up in case there is an emergency situation. Purchasing candles for emergencies can get expensive and storing them can be tricky. If a candle isn’t stored properly it can melt, bend or break making it much harder to use as well as dangerous.

Typical candles purchased in stores are scented and that isn’t something you want to store next to dry goods packed up just in case you need to re-locate to another area in a hurry. Regular candles have a limited life once they are lit and usually last up to eight hours.

Now you can be frugal, not worry about broken candles, funny perfumed scents and have a candle that will burn up to forty-five hours. It is very inexpensive to create a candle that will burn slowly, illuminate the area just like any store bought candle and keep for quite a long time and be ready for any emergency situation that may arise.

Here is what you do to create a homemade candle in a jiffy out of a can of Crisco!

Items needed to create an emergency candle:

  • A large can of Crisco
  • 1 bamboo skewer
  • 1 wax-coated cotton wick the length of the Crisco can

  1. Remove the lid and insert the skewer into the center of the can all the way to the bottom.
  2. Then pull the skewer out of the can and carefully insert the wax-coated wick until it reaches the bottom of the can.
  3. Trim the wick so that only ¼ of an inch sticks out of the top of the Crisco can.
  4. Light the wick and now you have a candle for emergencies if and when you run out of traditional candles.
  5. Enjoy!
