So your children really want a pet for the holidays, but you don't want to make the commitment. No problem -- you can get them a virtual cat! Okay, maybe this won't be quite what they were hoping for, but it'll be easier to take care of and will teach them a great lesson.
The ASPCA estimates that 70 million stray cats wander the United States, and most of the time, these are lost pets who weren't kept properly indoors or weren't provided with appropriate identification. To combat this problem, the ASPCA, in combination with Eventarc, has established Operation Cats to raise money and awareness for the ASPCA's spay and neuter program. The object? Create your very own personalized virtual talking cat, complete with the name, colors, and whisker length of your choice, then ask your friends and family to sponsor your cat by buying him accessories, toys, and even designer clothing and collars. Every penny given for your cat will be donated to the ASPCA's efforts in reducing pet overpopulation. And it's easy to share your cat via Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and email.
Your cat can even mingle with the cats created by your friends and family, so get them on board too! This can be a fun and worthwhile family holiday project. And the person who raises the most funds by December 31, 2010 will receive an ASPCA t-shirt, Funkitty Twist N' Treat, and a Star Chaser Ball (perfect for those families who actually have a real cat living with them). You can also become a fan of the ASPCA on Facebook and stay tuned for future updates on entering your virtual cat into contests.
Over $6,000 has already been raised for this cause, which is a total win for animals regardless of the highest fundraiser. Don't feel like creating a cat but you want to give back another way? Check out the leaderboards and buy an unpurchased accessory for a random person's cat, or just share the Operation Cats page with your social networks and encourage them to get involved.
Why spay or neuter your cat or dog?
One major advantage to spaying or neutering your pet is his or her chances at a healthier, longer life. Females will be almost immune to uterine infections and breast cancer (a huge killer of both cats and dogs), and males will experience far less testicular cancer and perianal tumors. And an equally important benefit will be the dramatically decreased rate of stray animals on the streets; preventing accidental births will go a long way to breaking down pet overpopulation. The ASPCA provides resources for low-cost spaying and neutering or, if you're in New York, you can schedule a visit from an ASPCA mobile spay/neuter clinic. Sadly, approximately four million cats and dogs are euthanized annually due to overpopulation, so we need to do all we can to put an end to this.

Cool! This reminds me of when those kids used to walk around with the little electronic Neopets - they might still do, I dont know. But the cool thing about this is it generates money for ASPCA's program. Good stuff.
Neopets...and remember Tamagatchis? I had a little dog one that I used to carry around. Anyway, yes, this is a great project for kids and adults alike who want to take a moment out of their crazy days and create something fun AND charitable. Thanks for your feedback, as always!
