Create a spa day at home for less

Justin Shearer,

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is taking time to pamper and relax our bodies and minds. We're so caught up in life by working, cleaning and taking care of others. Spend some time rejuvenating your body and spirit by having a spa day at home. You can take the luxury and serenity of the spa and transform your own house with similar features for a fraction of the cost.

First, you'll want to have a spa day at home at a time when you can put aside all your obligations. This means work, family and maintaining the home. If you need to request a day off in advance or get a babysitter for the afternoon, do it. This is your time and you deserve to treat yourself.

Next, put on some relaxing music. One you might like to try is the 'Spa' station on Pandora, which is also free. Run the bath water and add whatever bubble baths, oils or salts you have at home. If you don't have any, try this recipe: 1 cup of milk and 2 tbsp of honey. You can add in a few drops of your favorite essential oil or light a scented candle to bring in the element of scent. The candles also bring a soft lighting for relaxation. Soak for 20 minutes.

When you get out, make sure you have a soft robe or towel waiting for you. Massage in body oil or body cream to hydrate the skin. Chances are, you usually apply lotion very fast after a shower and move on. This time, take your sweet time, making sure to give yourself a massage and really let your skin soak in the moisture. Love your body.

Now pick a guilty pleasure and do this for at least one hour and be sure to stay away your TV, laptop and cell phone, unless it is for music purposes only. Here's a few ideas to choose from: reading a juicy novel, taking a cat-nap with a cozy blanket, painting your nails, sketching, writing in your journal or simply doing nothing. The point is to let your body and your mind take a break. Top off with some chocolate and a glass of a sparkly beverage to complete the mood and indulge in a day or half of day of taking care of you.
