Create a happy vegan 4th of July with these 5 simple substitutes

Give your 4th a compassion make-over with five easy changes. No fuss or special recipes needed; these are super simple ways to create a vegan feast that looks and tastes familiar, traditional and fun.

1. Make all your favorite salads—potato, macaroni, and cole slaw. Just switch out the regular mayonnaise for Follow Your Heart brand Vegenaise. With a flavor that is reminiscent of old-fashioned home-made mayo, you’ll lose the eggs and gain on flavor.

2. Skip the butter (and all that saturated fat) on corn-on-the-cob and aim for something a little more interesting. Cookbook author Robin Robertson wraps ears of corn in foil with fresh herbs and roasts them on the grill. Isa Chandra Moskowitz, also a well-known author of vegan cookbooks, gives hers a brush of olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and lemon zest. Or serve your corn Mexican-style with a drizzle of oil that is infused with lime and chili powder.

3. Explore veggie meats for the grill. Field Roast Apple Sage Sausages topped with grilled onions and apples will impress even the most die-hard meat-eaters at your barbecue.

4. Finish off your meal with red, white and blue sundaes by piling fresh blueberries and sliced strawberries over Coconut Bliss or So Delicious vegan ice cream.

5. Finally, as the coals burn low on the grill, gather up some sticks, and roast vegan marshmallows made by Sweet and Sara or Chicago Soy Dairy.
