Crayon Creatures gives children's drawings life

Crayon Creatures is a website where users can upload a child's drawing and receive a 3D version for around $130 plus a flat rate $20 international shipping. Each figure takes around 3 weeks to create and ship.

The process uses 3D printing technology to create a full-color sandstone figurine that is hard and rigid. The figures measure around 4 inches (longest measure) and made by 3D Print by Shapeways.

This project was created by cunicode a company that is taking design tools and 3D printing and creating useful fabrications to "bring ideas to life."

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is the process of making a three dimensional solid object out of a digital model by laying down successive layers of a material such as ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) or HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene). In order to do this you must have a materials printer. The prices of these printers are dropping but still cost more than $2,000. The price of the printers does not include the materials you print with.

The technology is also used in industrial design, architecture, engineering and construction, automotive, aerospace, geographic information systems (GIS), and many others.
