They don't make them like they used to, and we should all be very thankful that they don't. Sure the old sports cars and hot rods appeared to be "made better" but in actuality they weren't. In reality, they were death traps. Countless numbers of people died in these vintage vehicles because they simply were not built as good as they are today. Modern vehicles have the benefit of computerized crash testing during the concept process, which aids designers in choosing the best overall approach. Back then, there was only engineering formulas that were worked out on pen and paper, proceeded by actual crash testing. This process took forever, and stunted the safety growth in vehicles.

Today's safety instilled in modern vehicles is second to none. Beyond computer model crash testing, we have better materials, composites, and stronger manufacturing processes that are less costly. This alleviation of cost on the manufacturer allows them to put back more profits for investment in future automotive technologies. The growth rate we are currently experiencing in safety alone is monumental compared to growth rate during the 1950's. Sure there were advancements, but nothing like today. Take a look at the following crash test footage and you will see how far technology has come along in protecting human beings.

Our hire car wasn't ready today so we ended up with a Ford Edge. Great for the 2 of us.
Notice how the old Chevy desintegrate. It's easy to do that with NO ENGINE in the old car. They took out the engine, and that's why the video it's always "cut" when the hood of the old Chevy pops up (up - left - right, always cut at the right moment!).What a shame!
