A horrific crash seriously injured a driver and left two horses dead on A127. Essex Police were called to the accident and found a scene so disturbing that “they have advised witnesses to seek counseling.”
According to police, the accident took place shortly after 6:15 a.m. near Pound Lane, Wickford. Three horses were grazing in the center median of A127 when traffic spooked them and, startled, the horses ran into the road. One horse was immediately struck by the first vehicle. Three other cars then also crashed and a second horse was struck.
One of the drivers had to be cut out of his car by Rayleigh Weir firefighters. He was taken by ambulance to Basildon Hospital. He sustained a head injury. First reports are the injury is serious but is not thought to be life-threatening.
One of the horses was killed instantly. The second horse was critically injured and was put down by a veterinarian. A third horse escaped without any injuries.
Witnesses to the accident were horrified. A firefighter said, “It was a terrible scene.”
The horses had escaped from a nearby field and wandered into the road.
