Crappie Rally in Sanford big success

Attendees braved a brisk but sunny day on Saturday January 14 to attend a Crappie Rally in Sanford. The event was part of the Coastal Angler Magazine-Orlando Shad and Crappie Derby.

The Boat Tree Marina in Sanford was the perfect location for the educational and fun event. To make the event authentic Charlie McCullough from CAM fished behind the marina and brought back a bucket of black crappie just to show participants “how easy crappie fishing is.”

Gary Henderson, representing Travel County, gave the first seminar, on fly fishing for crappie. Capt. Tom Van Horn followed by educating the folks on long-trolling for crappie. McCullough finished the days seminars with a discussion of vertical trolling, the method he used to catch the bucket of crappie.

Mixed in with the education were vendors from most of the participating sponsors, free food, and a great raffle with many really nice prizes awarded.

Proceeds from the raffle will support Anglers for Conservation's Hooked Kids on Fishing programs.

The Shad and Crappie Derby continues through March 17, 2012. Registration is Free, so register at one of the participating sponsors and get out there and do some shad and crappie fishing.

Upcoming public events include a Free Shad and Crappie Fly Tying Event at Orlando Outfitters, on Thursday, January 26th from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. This even will include fly tying instruction and a seminar by Capt. Beau Osborne. Learn what you need to catch shad and crappie on fly in the Orlando area and see how easy it is to tie effective fly patterns for both species. These tying techniques can also be used to create your own shad and crappie jigs.

Next, on Saturday, February 25th - 11:00 – 2:00 p.m., a Free Shad Rally at the Jolly Gator Fish Camp on Hwy 46 adjacent to CS Lee Park in Geneva, Florida will highlight shad fishing tactics. Don't miss this one. It includes sponsor displays, giveaways and a raffle similar to the Crappie Rally just completed in Sanford.
