Tavares, Florida was the site of the first of two crappie tournaments that will determine the 2013 Florida champion. The event was kicked off on Thursday, January 24, with a media day event.
Local media representatives, including radio hosts, outdoor magazines, photographers, and other outdoor writers were on hand for the event. The media types are paired up with the pro crappie anglers and compete in a 4 hour shootout to see who can weigh in the heaviest crappie. Media winners receive gift certificates from Bass Pro (http://www.basspro.com) and bragging rights among their media pals.
For the pros the day is a chance to get in a little more pre-fishing and for the media it is a chance to see just how serious the pro anglers are about their fishing. One pro team, Matt Morgan and Kent Watson indicate the importance of pre-fishing and preparation to their overall success.
Morgan says that pre-fishing clears his mind and lets him concentrate on fishing on tournament day instead of worrying about adjusting electronics, tying rigs, or the dozens of other things the pros do in preparation for a tournament.
Morgan and Watson’s primary sponsor is Lucus Oil (http://www.lucasoil.com), a maker of premium marine products. The Morgan/Watson team stressed the importance of maintaining engine and other boat fluids to avoid breakdowns on the water that can steal fishing time.
Next on the tournament schedule is Lake Monroe at Sanford, Florida. Monroe is a one day tournament event on February 2, with the combined weight totals from Tavares and Sanford determining the Florida champion.
