For the first time in the history of the “Donkey Kong Country” series, Cranky Kong will be a playable character, Nintendo announced in a press release obtained by Examiner on Monday.

Cranky joins long-time favorites Dixie and Diddy as Donkey Kong’s sidekicks in the upcoming Wii U game, “Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.” According to the press release, Cranky will be able to ride on Donkey Kong’s back during single-player action, but will be able to roam freely in multi-player. Despite his advancing age, Cranky’s cane allows him to bounce on obstacles such as spikes (much like Scrooge McDuck in Capcom’s ‘DuckTales) and get to hidden areas.

The game is set for a Feb. 21 North American release in stores and on the Nintendo eShop.
