A movie-themed party is a fun and memorable way to celebrate awards night with friends. Instead of buying a bunch of expensive decorations and favors from the party store, DIY your way to an affordable, enjoyable event. Use your skills to craft your own movie-themed party.
Concession Stand
Turn an entrance table or a kitchen table into a DIY concession stand by adding DIY decorations and edibles. Pick a table, any table, and cover it with a tablecloth. Get a plain tablecloth and embellish it yourself by cutting out gold stars in foil. Attach them to the cloth with gold pins or thumbtacks to add glitz and glam to your spread.
Get some sturdy card stock and look online for printable templates to make your own popcorn boxes. Striped, classically-shaped popcorn boxes will definitely bring the theme home. Instead of buying expensive bagged popcorn, get the kernels and pop them yourself on the stove (follow the directions carefully in order to be safe!). Fill up your DIY boxes and place them on your concession stand.
Add boxes of classic movie candy to the table to complete the concession stand look. You can even put out a glass jar with a little sign for tips. Keep the contents of the tip jar to fund your next party, or give it away as a prize if you plan to play games at the party.
Ticket Taker
Use your card stock to print out movie tickets. Look for templates online or use a paint program to design standard movie tickets and cut them out. Guests can use them as tokens to vote on movies and “buy” concession stand items.
Walk of Fame
Get a red blanket or red fabric and cut it into long strips, 2 to 3 feet wide, to make your own red carpet. Cut large stars out in gold fabric or card stock to create your own red carpet walk of fame. Write the names of movie actors and actresses who will be featured during the party on the stars, and bring a touch of Hollywood into your event. To make the walk of fame really pop, write the names in glitter pens or colored markers.
Star Charades
Pick 12 to 20 of your favorite Hollywood stars. Cut head shots of the stars out of magazines, or print them out, and glue them to index cards. On the back of the index cards, write each star’s name and a brief resume of the movies in which they’ve appeared (cite the most well-known movies). Put all these cards in a hat or a box and allow guest to draw them out. Have each guest act out their star for the group, and play star charades. The pictures and brief resume will help guests match the right name to the right star, so the game goes more smoothly.
Use your DIY skills to craft a perfect movie-themed party, and celebrate awards season in a fun, memorable way.
