Ask any avid crafter what he or she enjoys most about their hobby and you will likely get an impassioned reply. Some people like the challenge of learning a new skill, while others simply get a kick out of shopping for new supplies. Deanna from Reno says that she feels a sense of accomplishment from crafting, and really, what could be more gratifying than making something with you own two hands?
Handmade items can also be an economical alternative, according to Janelle from Bend, Oregon. She enjoys making jewelry "because I love jewelry with real gems and stones, but I can't afford do buy it." Many crafters make things for friends and family, giving the gift a more personal touch and saving money in the process.
The most common benefit of crafting that people cite is stress management. Crafts and hobbies can be very relaxing, while offering a creative outlet that many people crave. "When I first started scrapbooking I thought it was just to preserve the memories but now it is so much more," says Wendi from Leesburg, Virginia. "Scrapbooking has awakened the 'artist' in me and I have discovered that I need to be creative. That may mean scrapbooking, it could include painting, photography, or sewing. The key to my sanity - to my mental health - is to be crafty/creative." The sentiment is one that most arts and crafts enthusiasts can relate to.
Some, like Amy from Omaha, Nebraska, just feel compelled to create things. She says simply, "it's in me." It's in me too, Amy.
