Michael Crabtree and Frank Gore both scored touchdowns in the final regular season game and celebrated by tossing a football into the crowd at Candlestick Park.
This celebration came at a price as the NFL fined both players $10,500, according to a league spokesman.
It is a safety issue for the NFL to prohibit players tossing the ball in the crowd. The league doesn't want fans to be fighting for a ball in the stands. As an alternative, the NFL allows players to toss or hand the ball to an individual fan.
Crabtree had two touchdowns in the 49ers' 27-13 win on Sunday over the Cardinals. He threw the ball to the stands on both touchdowns. Gore also threw the football into the stands after his franchise-record 51st rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Previously, Crabtree was $5,000 for throwing the ball into the stands after scoring a touchdown when the 49ers played against the Broncos in London's Wembley Stadium back in 2010.
