CPS has had it's ordeals in the past with the meals not being healthy enough for the children. Now the meals are at or above USDA recommendation. Children were also not getting enough of physical exercise while in school. For example recess had been dropped from many schools.
However things have been turning around last year the school system has changed the meals around to make them healthier. Recess has bee included in more and more schools and will be included in all elementary schools.
It's not just about eating healthy and being active at school. Everyone needs to be active and have good nutrition. If the parents/caregivers don't eat right the children may not as well because the kids look up to them.
Obesity has been a problem a look at High Schoolers shows that many are still overweight, but on the contrary more children going into Kindergarden are at a healthy weight. Which is a great which shows things are working. Still more needs to be done but it is a start. The plan CPS has now is called Healthy Chicago. There is a new plan in the works includes Healthy Chicago but there is more to it and this is call Helathy CPS, within this they are dedicated to making Chicago the healthiest city in the nation. Being Healthy isn't just for Children it's For Everyone!!!
Can be hard to eat healthy with all the fast food places and the I want it now. Everyine can eat healthy just may take a little bit more patience and thought into the foods your buying for the meals you cook. Yes it may be cheaper to buy that bag of chips than that bag of apples, but for one that bag of chips is not healthy compared to the apples and also those apples will fill you up more so you won't be hungry as soon, but they will also give you more energy.
Eating out and healthy can be hard
- Try to pick out places that have healthier foods
- don't be afraid to ask the waiter/waitress for substituatioins say instead of french fries you get a baked potato
- Ask for a to go box before your meal has even come that way when it does come you can put half of it in their to bring home
- Don't forget to think about your drink maybe order a milk instead of pop, or order a light beer instead of a regular, wine instead of mixed drinks
It is ok to splurge once in a great while
When your not healthy there are more problems with your health from illness to disease to low self esteem and more
If you are overweight it's harder yet. Your chances of heart disease grow, diabetes, other illness and diseases as well there is high cholesterol.
So it's never to late to start being healthy just have to keep working at it.
Exercise doesn't take alot you don't have to join a gym to get good exercise go on a long walk, jog, run up and down stairs anything is better than nothing
