April is National Poetry Month and the Chicago Public Library (C.P.L.) is celebrating with its 15th annual Poetry Fest on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Harold Washington Library Center. The C.P.L. stated, “This poetry-packed day will include writing workshops, readings, exhibitors from local presses and an open mic that always draws a diverse and exciting array of Chicago poets.”
Poetry Fest will culminate in a reading by headliner Sonia Sanchez, a poetess and activist who was influential in the Black Arts Movement. The C.P.L. states she “promises to blow the doors off the Pritzker Auditorium with her fierce, jazz-inflected poetry.”
Ms. Sanchez will also speak at the awards ceremony for the 10th annual Haiku Fest. Children from all over Chicago and beyond will read their winning haikus to the accompaniment of the Tsukasa Taiko Japanese hand drummers and the Hyde Park Suzuki Institute musicians.
