The Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner Honoring Isabel Allende, Michael Lewis, and Christine Sneed will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at The Forum at UIC. The venue is per usual The Forum, located at 725 West Roosevelt Road on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago (U.I.C.) on the Near West Side of Chicago.

The Chicago Public Library Foundation and the Chicago Public Library (C.P.L.) will recognize novelist Isabel Allende (The House of the Spirits, City of the Beasts) and bestselling non-fiction author and financial journalist Michael Lewis (The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, Moneyball, The Blind Side, Liars Poker, and Boomerang) with the Carl Sandburg Literary Award.
Receiving the 21st Century Award, honoring significant recent achievement by a Chicago-area writer, is Grace Paley Prizewinner Christine Sneed (Little Known Facts, Portraits of a Few of the People I've Made Cry). Ms. Sneed is a graduate of the MFA creative writing program at Indiana University and has published stories in Best American Short Stories, PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, New England Review, The Southern Review, Ploughshares, Pleiades, Glimmer Train, Massachusetts Review, Meridian, Other Voices, Greensboro Review, River Styx, Phoebe, and South Dakota Review.
Journalist, National Public Radio host and author Scott Simon will lead an intimate discussion with Ms. Allende and Mr. Lewis. The CPL Foundation states, “To highlight Chicago’s vibrant, diverse literary community, a prominent writer with ties to the city will be seated at each table, engaging guests from Chicago’s business, civic and cultural communities in lively and thought-provoking conversation.”
This 13th Annual Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner is being co-chaired by Tom Ricketts, Chairman of the Chicago Cubs, and Marcy Carlin, a Foundation board member and Senior Vice President of Essex Investment Management.
The CPL Foundation and CPL present the Carl Sandburg Literary Award annually to an acclaimed author in recognition of outstanding contributions to the literary world and honors a significant work or body of work that has enhanced the public's awareness of the written word. The 21st Century Award honors significant recent achievement in writing by a Chicago-based author or authoress.
The CPL Foundation states, "In presenting this award, the Foundation's Directors hope to encourage the creation of new works and increase public awareness of the writer's talents."
One can purchase tickets online. An Individual Ticket costs$1,000.00, of which $870.00 is tax-deductible. A Premiere Individual Ticket costs $2,500.00, of which $8,960.00 is tax-deductible.
A Patron Table ticket costs $10,000.00, of which $8,960.00 is tax-deductible. A Benefactor Table ticket costs $15,000.00, of which $13,960.00 is tax-deductible.
A Grand Benefactor Table ticket costs $25,000.00, of which $23,960.00 is tax-deductible. A Lead Sponsor ticket costs $50,000.00, of which $47,600.00 is tax-deductible.
Also thanks to the CPL Foundation, Ms. Allende will speak in the Winter Garden of the CPL’s Harold Washington Library Center at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. She will be joined by Angélica Atondo, News Anchor or Univision Chicago. Ms. Atondo Mendez is a three-time Emmy Award Nominee and the author of El Secreto Para Lograrlo: Caminos con Corazon (The Secret of Achievement: Heartways).
Seating is limited and available on a first come, first served basis. The CPL recommends arriving early.
Once capacity is reached in the Winter Garden, guests will be seated in an overflow space and view a simulcast. Once the overflow space is filled, seating will no longer be available.
Books are available for purchase. The authoress will sign books at the conclusion of the program.
