Cowgill breaks out to extend D-backs hold on first

Congrats to Collin Cowgill, who hit his first big-league home run yesterday in a 6-1 Arizona Diamondbacks win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Cowgill, who went 4-for-4 on the day, helped the Diamondbacks stretch their lead to four full games over the San Francisco Giants, who fell to Houston on Sunday. Both teams have just 28 games left to play, and will face each other six times down the stretch.

Having recently seen the Diamonbacks' sport psychologist, Cowgill "got his mind freed up... you could just see how much calmer he was at the plate," said manager Kirk Gibson.

"What more could you ask for?" Cowgill said to the Arizona Republic (linked below), "your first time getting called up, and you're in the middle of a National League pennant race. It's an unbelievable experience so far."
