American Idol patriarch Simon Cowell says it's time for Lady Gaga to bring her professional wisdom to the show's contestants.
Cowell isn't suggesting that Lady Gaga take over his judges' chair on American Idol when he leaves the show after this season, but rather that Gaga act as one of the celebrity mentors who advise the show's finalists when the season kicks into full gear.
“I think we should have Lady Gaga," said Cowell during a Thursday afternoon press conference via telephone. "She's the most relevant pop artist in the world at the moment. I've met her and she's very smart."
Past American Idol mentors have included Barry Manilow, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Quentin Tarantino, Smokey Robinson, Dolly Parton, and Randy Travis. Travis provided one of Season 8's msot hilarious moments when he reacted to Adam Lambert's version of Johnny Cash's 'Ring of Fire' by saying: "I don’t even know what to say about this boy…that particular arrangement of a Johnny Cash song threw me for a loop."
Simon Cowell also commented that he doesn't believe any current big name stars like Madonna or Elton John are a realistic choice to replace him: "It will never happen because of the massive, massive time commitment."
