While the offense has struggled to get into the end zone, the Cowboys defense has been putting on a clinic. The Bengals were held without a point until Jordan Shipley's return set them up for an easy touchdown. And the Cowboys defense was pitching a shutout three and a half quarters into Thursday's game when the Raiders offense suddenly heated up -- a Raiders offense that included some veteran players like Kyle Boller and Michael Bennett going up against Cowboys youngsters.
We knew the Cowboys first string defense was good with the potential to be dominant. But what is really impressive is the ability for the second string defense to dominate. Injuries happen in football, and one of the things that separate good teams from great teams is depth. And it looks like these Cowboys have some solid depth on defense, especially at linebacker.
As for the offense, well, let's just say some work still needs to be done. The Cowboys first string seems to move the ball pretty well, but the problems with finishing the drive that we saw last year seem to have carried over into preseason. Not that Cowboys fans should panic. The offense usually takes a little longer to get in sync than the defense, and preseason games means no game planning, which means no figuring out how to attack the opposing while in the red zone.
