then a one of a kind performance by
COWBOY TROY (of Big &
Rich's Musik Mafia, a judge on Nashville Star, and many other national
achievements in Country Music.)
At 6’5” (without the cowboy hat,) darker skin and unique sound, Cowboy Troy isn't exactly your average Country Music singer. I am the first to admit that rap and pop were really not really top on my list in Texas music. But the more I listened (loving “Big and Rich,) I became even more intrigued and delighted by Troy’s "hick-hop" music, dubbed by Troy himself. That amazing blend of country, rap and rock is still causing quite a stir throughout the country music world. Why there is a controversy still mystifies me even more!
After 2 years of anticipation and nearly 18 months of fans serving as the judges panel, Cowboy Troy released his third CD, "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions" in September 2009. Five of the new songs actually feature Troy carrying a tune, in his own way, after his fans wanted to see if he could sing. What basically started out as a joke and a dare was recorded in Las Vegas, NV at Studio Blue. The A-Side of the album is referred to as "A-Side from the Obvious". The B-Side is referred to as "B-Side Myself". Each set is separated by a "Mind Clearing Musical Intermission".
Featured hits, "Cash in the Cookie Jar", "That's Me" and "Wisdom" will energize you. While, "Bring Me Back to Life" will throw you for a loop. The dance club ditty "All Hat, No Cattle Remix" will also get you shakin'. When it's all said and done, "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions" will demolish any preconceived notions about Cowboy Troy and his music.
I found something addictive and the more I listened, the more I loved each song. Cowboy Troy’s new release is something different as it truly shows his diverse and incredible vocal talents. To date, this album is his finest masterpiece!
In fact, anyone familiar with Bob Dylan’s almost rap “Subterranean Homesick Blues” will immediately see the parallels. In the same sense, Cowboy Troy’s blend of a little funk, rock and Country Music carries the same messages with am maverick artistry that Bob Dylan or Townes Van Zandt would love.
As Troy reflects on the evolution and emergence of a career that's quite unique in many ways, "I've pushed the envelope a lot further than anyone expected this time." In my opinion, Troy has completely redesigned the envelope for the better. Keep your ears and mind open, folks. People balked at the new sounds of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Townes Van Zandt and many others who stretched it to limits unbounded. It’s just in a little different form called Cowboy Troy and "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions"
Cowboy Troy (AKA Troy Coleman) has the definite influence of that “Big and Rich” sound. Anyone who's pegged him in either the novelty or strictly rap category will be as dramatically and pleasantly surprised as this reviewer was, with "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions"” Two years ago, when Cowboy Troy's Warner Bros./Raybaw debut, “Loco Motive,” debuted at number two on the Billboard Country Albums chart, the industry could not deny that something unique was going on and it continues to emerge stronger. Followed by Troy’s “Black in the Saddle,” the momentum continued at an even faster, picking up legions of fans along the way. Just as we thought it couldn’t get any better, along comes the same train, but even faster, sleeker and filled with strong, moving lyrics and vocals in "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions."
Troy says. "I've done a lot of experimenting here (on "Demolition Mission: Studio Blue Sessions") We've got strings, some songs where you might even think about the Beatles, others where the rock influence comes through, especially Motorhead, and of course the Run-DMC and rap. I'm comfortable pushing the envelope a lot more. There are also some songs here that are darker, and have a message. If you just thought that everything I did was comical or upbeat, this shows another side. I think music sometimes has to challenge and make people listen, just as much as make them feel good or want to dance. You can do all three of these things with the songs on “Demolition.”
At Troy’s invitation, Nashville Star season five winner Angela Hacker lends vocals to "Lock Me Up" and "Hick Chick." For extra flavor it also features rocker M. Shadows, lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold, as well as the deep baritone of Troy's Muzik Mafia cohort, James Otto (James is another story all in itself. His music is incredible!) The result is a tasty melting pot of country, rap, and rock 'n roll that will have any naysayer becoming a believer!
Just listen to Troy’s “I Played Chicken with the Train.” Despite, not surprisingly, few brave Country music radio stations aired the song. It immediately peaked at number 48 on the charts. It also became the number one country download at the iTunes music store and has gone on to sell some 342,000 copies. Then there is the single”Hook ‘Em Horns!” With this Dallas native, you know he loves Texans!
Finally, when you add to this glorious mixture the mastery and extraordinary talent of co-producer John Rich (AKA J. MONEY) this convergence really starts to make sense. "John was one of the first people in the business that understood how natural what I was doing really was and that it wasn't an act, just a natural extension of myself and my musical influences," Troy remembers.
Cowboy Troy explains that he feels that his music shouldn't be deemed something outrageous, gimmicky, or bizarre."I grew up listening to a mix of country music, rap and rock, with a little bit of funk and pop," Coleman says. "That didn't make me unusual back home (Dallas, Texas). Whenever I would go into the honky-tonks and they put on Run-DMC or Sir Mix-A-Lot, the floor would be packed with the cowboy hats swaying and people having a good time dancing. So it didn't seem like that big a deal for me once I decided to try music that all these things would converge in my music."
And the world took note. Troy was everywhere-from the pages of People, Rolling Stone, Time, and USA Today to The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, Larry King Live and the list goes on. But perhaps more than anything else, it's his hosting gig on USA's Nashville Star that has kept him in the national consciousness these past two years. Troy has co-hosted this series with Jewel, and he's fierce in his defense of the show and desire to separate it from what happens on American Idol.
Troy explains, “First of all, there are no people on our show that don't have any talent, nor is anyone interested in making a name for themselves by ripping up folk. Now that doesn't mean there won't be critical statements, or that people won't acknowledge when someone isn't singing in tune or doing material that doesn't work. But if you watch our show you won't see anyone delighting in ridiculing a contestant or trying to follow their own agenda. The most important thing for everyone on our show is making sure that the best and most talented people win and that they get their own agenda. The most important thing for everyone on our show is making sure that the best and most talented people win and that they get the seasoning and advice they need to make it in the business."
Most recently, Troy has contributed to “Cowboy Stomp”, a song and video for the Dallas Cowboys on the EP “Get Rowdy.” This is sure to be a huge hit! In addition, Troy recorded “Hook ‘Em Horns” for the Texas Longhorns, which he performed in Pasadena at the BCS National Championship Events in 2010.
Troy says of his latest release, "Fans like all kinds of music, as long as it’s good. I think the more we can have a rapper with a pop singer or a rapper with a country artist or a metal artist with a country artist, whatever, people will start to look at it and go, That's Cool. I never would have thought of that before. If you have that cross-pollination it not only makes better music but it makes all of us better. "
Bill Archer, 2009 Texas Country Music Association’s Video of the year award with a pictorial video to his song, “Heroes.”
Bill Archer holds his own on the Country Music scene! His new release “Cancun” is an exciting traditional Country Music gift! As Bill says “I released my 6 track EP “Cancun” on 10/13/2010 as a birthday present to me.”
Hailing from Baytown, Bill has made his way to a major force in the music world. “Cancun” is his latest CD, filled with six songs and released on October 13th 2010. Although “Cancun” is a light-hearted fun CD with that great island music feel! “Cancun” has become a song which I can’t get out of my head! I must need a vacation, because I can sure hear the call in Bill’s song! One hot dance song, “Redneck Paradise, Free to Fly, the laughter generating, “Another Redneck Got on the Internet” (oh my gosh, I think I know those lyrics!) will all get you up on the dance floor whether you want to or not. And then, the one song really hit me with a force of incredible songwriting and vocals that will make anyone feel the hurt and love for a father separated from his son or daughter and watching them leave on those silver wings of the airplane – “He’s Not Daddy.” “If My Heart Could Talk” is another bittersweet tribute to letting go of pride and doing what you know what your heart wants so desperately. The entire album has become a standout hit it is available for digital download from all our favorite sites. (ITunes, Zune, Wal-Mart, Amazon, MySpace Music, the list goes on.)
Bill has been nominated for 4 awards by the Texas Country Music Association including: Male Vocalist of the year, Single of the year, Songwriter of the year and winner of the TCMA Video of the year.
As a special guest of COX Radio in Las Vegas for the ACM’s and the after party, Bill Archer and his band attended the taping of Brooks and Dunn special from ACM, and the private premier of Kenny Chesney’s 3D Summer hosted by Kenny.
The Country Music world has truly taken notice of this great talent. Bill was flown to Nashville by UMG for the chance to deliver a demo, tour the studio, presented with floor seats to see George Strait, Reba, and Lee Ann Womack on Sep. 11th
Now he has been asked to be the special guest by Cowboy Troy and beginning to book big fairs and rodeos for 2011.
Bill Archer is a survivor. He had a month long stay in the hospital to remove a portion of his lung. It took over a year to recover and retrain his breathing and his voice. After that he released “Cancun!” When you hear “Cancun” you would never guess that those beautiful vocals survived and are even better than ever! We sure hope Bill sets those songs free with that incredible voice! He has written 45 songs since October 2009, and if it follows the great success of “Cancun,” he has to share, right? It’s just a wonderful treasure chest of songs yet unleashed. On Bill Archer’s “Cancun” his backup band is incredible – these guys have an instinctive flair to support each of Bill’s songs with seamless ease. His new website will be up and running soon – being built and maintained by Mark Chestnut’s web guru!
