Coverband Review: Danyavaad at Downtown San Diego's Stage Bar and Grill

Danyavaad performed last Thursday evening in an intimate setting at the Stage Bar and Grill, located in the heart of San Diego’s downtown, Gaslamp district. Danyavaad, which means thank you in Hindi, spelled as "dhanyavad," was comprised of an eclectic ensemble of musicians, vocalists, belly dancers, a violinist and a circus act.

According to the band’s vocalist, electric sitar player and co-founder, Greg Vaughan, “Danyavaad caters to any size stage.” From a small stage to a grand festival platform, entertainment is taken to a new level by Danyavaad. Vaughan’s vocals and sitar are accompanied by percussionist and co-founder of Danyavaad, Gabriel Penix and DJ and bassist, Sandy Bagri.

Danyavaad’s cover of “Cemetery Gates” by the Smiths was ingeniously transformed. The pulsating accents of percussions were assertively tempered by the rhythm of the base, allowing the sitar to playfully interject Danyavaad’s unmistakable signature of Middle Eastern sound to the Smith’s famous piece. Vaughan’s vocals are reminiscent of Rush’s Geddy Lee. A musical lattice of familiar yet foreign notes descended upon the audience as it willfully coaxed its audience into preparing for what was yet to come.
