What a difference one night makes! For designer Michael Costello that one night has changed his career trajectory and sent him spinning into the celestial firmament of fashion. Beyoncé brought the fashion elite to their feet at the Grammy Awards last week.
Costello, 29, whose showroom is in Los Angeles, told People Magazine that achieving that fashion fete was not easy. “I cannot tell you the amount of labor that went into that dress just to make sure [there would be] no wardrobe malfunctions.” he said. Beyoncé never had a fitting, but the dress was obviously meant to be on her body, and her stylist Ty Hunter had the vision to put her in it!
“He was hysterical crying,” Richard Galvin, his publicist, told Examiner.com. “He’s still in shock.” Costello didn’t find out that Beyoncé wore the dress until Hunter posted a close-up of the dress fabric on Instagram and even then he wasn’t sure. He had made Beyoncé six other dresses to choose from. But it was the translucent lace dress with the hand-sewn sequins that won the honor of gracing that Beyoncé body.
“Jay-Z said it was one of the best dresses Beyoncé ever put on,” Galvin said. “And Beyoncé tweeted ‘I need more.’” Costello hopes to hear the word “more” out of the months of the buyers from Saks, Neiman’s, Bloomingdale’s, who are expected to attend his 8 p.m. show on February 8th at the Helen Mills, a fashion venue in the heart of Chelsea.
Costello already has offers rolling in. “There’s a guy who’s an obsessive Beyoncé fan who offered us $250,000 for the dress,” Costello told People. “It’s crazy.” At the Golden Globes Costello met Claire Danes, who told him to send her some dresses. “Did Claire Danes just ask me for a gown?” Galvin says Costello asked as she walked away. He’ll get over the shock soon enough.
But made no mistake Costello’s of victory has been hard won by this Project Runway alumna, who has been paying his dues for the past 18 years. Costello, who produced his first couture collection at 14, has been designing for celebrities from Cher to Celine Dion. His client portfolio includes Toni Braxton, Paris Hilton, Selma Hayek, Mary J. Bilge, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan. "
"It's a great point in his life," says Galvin. "Everything good comes to light."
