Coupons 101: Why buy coupons?

Coupon clipping services can save you money.

At first, it may seem counterintuitive to talk about buying coupons, either on eBay or from a coupon clipping service. After all, coupons help you save money, so why should you spend money in order to do so? You can get coupons from friends and family members and from your own Sunday paper. However, there are a few reasons why buying coupons may be worth the initial outlay and actually save you money.

First, not all regions receive the same coupon values. You may find that pasta is on sale in your area for $1, but your newspaper only had coupons for 75 cents off - and they're not doubled at your store. However, a different region of the country may have had 50 cent coupons, which will be doubled to a dollar at your store, making the pasta free. If you could buy a large number of these coupons somewhere, you would essentially be paying just the cost of the coupons to get that many boxes of pasta. Not bad!

Second, you may simply not have access to as many coupons as you want for a particular sale. Buying extra newspapers will cost you extra money as well, and you'll wind up with a large number of coupons you'll never use. Asking friends and family can only take you so far (unless you're lucky). If you want to stock up on a sale, it may be worth buying the coupons for that sale.

So where can you buy coupons? There are many sellers on eBay charging for their time and effort (it is illegal to charge for the coupons themselves). Simply search for the brand name and "coupon" and you should find the auctions you need.

There are also coupon clipping services such as the Coupon Clippers, the Coupon Master, and the Coupon Carry-Out. Again, these services will charge you a small fee for their time and for postage, and they may have minimum orders that you have to reach, but they tend to have large numbers of coupons available to you.

In the end, you have to weigh the cost of the coupons against the savings you'll see and the number of items you want to buy. If you want to fill your pantry, however, then watch the sales and plan carefully so you receive your orders before the sales end.

I use the CouponClippers fairly regularly. It's perfect for people who don't have time to clip coupons, and I use it to be able to stock up when something's on sale. Some people say, "why buy coupons when you can get them for free?" It's because you can get QUANTITIES of a good coupon for something you will actually use. When the coupon doubles, it more than covers the small administrative and mailing fees.
