Couponing for Community, an organized effort to have couponers donate 10,000 items to their local food pantries, needy families or organizations ran from May 8 - May 14. Participants could visit the Couponing for Community Facebook page and log in the number of donated items. It was an effort to bring awareness to those in need by utilizing the network of dedicated coupon enthusiasts and social media.
The organizer had an original goal of 10,000 donated items. That was quickly met so the goal then was raised higher and higher until it capped out at 26,639 items being donated nationwide. You can view a video of the photos people submitted to Facebook.
The National Association of Letter Carrier's Stamp Out Hunger food drive also took place on May 14, 2011. Letter carriers picked up non perishable food donations from the people on their delivery route. Many people used this convenient opportunity to donate items from their personal pantry, even if they were not avid coupon users.
