It's easy to get sucked in by all the pretty pictures on the coupons and the idea that you're saving money every time you shop. But sometimes it's best to put the scissors down and walk away from the insert. Before you clip, ask yourself this question...
Would I want it if it were free?
It happens to every newbie couponer. You're scanning your Sunday inserts and you see a coupon offering $1 off a box of Poptarts and you know Poptarts are on sale this week for $1.19. If you clip that coupon you can get a box of Poptarts for just 19 cents. That's a deal you just can't pass up so there's no question about it – you should clip that coupon now.
Turn the page and there's another great coupon, this one offering $1.50 off a bag of potato chips if you buy a 2-liter bottle of soda. Let's see... the chips are regularly priced $3.59 and the soda's on sale two for a dollar. That means you'd only have to spend $2.59 for the chips and soda combined. Deal. Clip that coupon, too.
But take a look. Were those items on your shopping list? If not, you just increased your grocery bill by an additional $2.78. It might not sound like much now, but what else are you going to throw in your cart? And what does that amount to when you multiply it by 52 weeks of shopping?

More important – if these items weren't even on your list, then you weren't even thinking about buying them. You probably don't even want them. After all, they're just junk food.
Before you clip those coupons, ask yourself this: If someone were giving away Poptarts, chips and soda for free, would you even take them? If not, then don't even clip the coupon. You'll just be spending money on something you don't even want.
