When I met Executive Chef Nancy Longo back in 1989 when Pierpoint opened she was breaking ground with new Maryland cuisine like the Brussel sprouts coleslaw and smoked crab cakes. You can still find these modern takes on Maryland cuisine and her salute to Asian and Italian cuisines on her menu. 

I like to believe I kicked off Chef Longo’s cooking classes when I asked her to do a cooking class for the Epicurean Club of Maryland back in its day. Longo is a great teacher and runs classes regularly for adults and children throughout the year.

Before it was a trend, Longo was an advocate of saving the Chesapeake Bay.  Having gone through lymphatic surgery due to getting sick on seafood, Chef Longo brought in the crème de la crème of celebrity chefs of the day to the Aquarium for a fundraiser: Alice Waters, Paul Prudhomme, Jasper White, Mark Miller and more. She went undercover into New York's Fulton fish market in New York for a story for ABC Prime Time.

I’m a huge fan of Nancy, her food and her spirit.  She and her restaurant have supported numerous charities over the years and still represents Baltimore after fifteen years at the SuperBowl’s Taste of the NFL fundraiser.  Add cookbook author, caterer and advocate for the downtrodden, Chef Longo is a woman to admire.
