It is often known as the oldest profession in the world, with millions of men and women working in the trade around the world. However, prostitution is still an illegal profession, and law enforcement always addresses alleged cases of prostitution seriously.
Recently, Vincent Lombardo and his wife Melissa, both of Massapequa, were accused of running an online, international prostitution ring from their house, according to a report in Newsday.
The couple are alleged to have provided sex workers to customers in New York and in Florida.
Online escort services, like the business that the Lombardos are alleged to have run, have become increasingly popular. Such services offer both the customers and workers relative privacy when it comes to setting up liasons. Many online escort services also operate law-abiding businesses, with strict "no sexual contact" between clients and employees.
The Lombardos, according to reports, have denied running a prostitution ring or having knowledge of any sexual activities taking place between their clients and employees. The couple were indicted today on federal money laundering charges.
