A couple in Maryland has been accused of stealing shopping carts with the intention of turning them in for scrap metal. Officers were alerted to the case when they saw a pickup truck with several shopping carts in the bed. Police pulled the driver over for questioning.
The man eventually admitted that he had stolen the carts from a local grocery store and that he was planning to turn them in as scrap metal to make some money. The man and his wife were arrested and have both been charged with theft (less than $1,000) and theft scheme (less than $1,000). Neither the man nor his wife have posted bail and are both still in jail awaiting an upcoming hearing.
It is unknown just how many shopping carts the couple had stolen or if they had cashed any in yet. They are both being held at the Frederick county adult detention center.
