Insurance fraud is being targeted by the San Diego County District Attorney.
In between come-ons for the latest films and snack treats, movie-goers in county theaters will witness a series of short ads.
They're aimed at curbing insurance fraud, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said in a statement. It's hoped the ads will make people think twice before committing workers’ compensation and auto insurance fraud.
Fraudulent claims and assorted charges cost California consumers an estimated $15 billion dollars a year, Dumanis said.
Viewers of the message are urged to “Don’t do it, don't tolerate it, report it."
“During difficult economic times, insurance fraud has been shown to increase,” Dumanis said.
Dumanis estimates 37,000 people every day in the county will be exposed to the "powerful anti-fraud message."
The office is well financed to prosecute such fraud. An entire division exists to reduce insurance fraud, working in close concert with the California Department of Insurance.
Funds for the campaign come via insurance fraud grants from the California Workers’ Compensation Fraud Assessment Commission and the California Department of Insurance.
The movie theater ads began running last Thursday and are scheduled to run until December 3.
