County Board of Education honors 20 '2020 Vision' school awardees

San Jose, CA (January 8) -- Twenty shools in Santa Clara County will be honored on January 19, 2012 at the Santa Clara County Office of Education during the Annual SJ2020 Vision Awards for their initiatives to eliminate achievement  gap by the year 2020, according to Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Charles Weis.

The SJ2020 Vision Awards is a collaborative community effort to close the gap or eliminate the achievement gap of low-performing student groups against a group of students that are more advanced and performing. Actually, the vision award was spurred by  the persistent disparity  in academic performance  between two groups : lower-performing  Hispanic/Latino and African-American students as against higher-performing  Asian and  white/non-Hispanic  students.

The award is given to schools  for their noteworthy accomplishments in closing  the gap. Featured speakers during the event are San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and Dr. Weis.
