Various Artists - The Country Fried Rock Collection Vol.2: For Nuci's Space

Back in 2012 everybody’s favorite online purveyors of Americana, Country and Southern Rock music, Country Fried Rock (CFR), partnered with Nuci’s Space out of Athens, GA to release a compilation of tunes to help raise money for said organization. Nuci’s Space’s is a suicide prevention organization that is there to help provide mental and physical health services for musicians that may have no other options. Building on the success of the first volume of tunes a second compilation has been released in 2013. Following the same platform, Sloane Spencer of CFR fame, has assembled yet another incredible batch of music. Given support from many CFR alumni, they have all donated their music to help out this cause.

The Country Fried Rock Collection Vol . 2: For Nuci’s Space is 20 songs of tasty Americana roots music. Various artists have contributed a selection of tunes that cover new material, existing tunes, live songs and b-sides to round things out. Some of the folks on this record are or have been house hold names, some are up and coming and some you may not have heard of before, but one thing they all have in common is they are all damn good. Musicians such as Michelle Malone, Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ and Jack Logan represent Georgia’s old guard of music. Malone proves she can still rock with the guitar heavy “Wasted On You” and Logan’s unmistakable sparse delivery on “Burnin‘ Giant Holes” never gets old. Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ adds a bot of twang with the jangly “Where’s My Country”, another fine new track from the revitalized rockers. Veteran bands American Aquarium and Centro-Matic join in the fun with a couple of great songs. The first offers up their soon to be a classic “Cape Fear River” while the latter dishes out some serious fuzzy noise with “Around Pullin’ Vines”. Shonna Tucker & Eye Candy, Chickasaw Mudd Puppies and Matt Hudgins all join in the fun while up and coming bands such as the District attorneys and Belle Adair deliver a couple of the best tracks on the album. While each and every song is a good one, my favorites have to be the rowdy blues infused “Don’t Rattle My Cage” from Hillbilly Frankenstein and “Fourth of July” a darker look at America’s hallowed day, from Porter & the Pollies.

This album is more than just a collection of great music. It helps a good organization, Nuci’s Space, it introduces people to a lot of musicians they may never have heard of, it introduces folks to Country Fried Rock and it is a shining example of how good a taste in music the CFR host Sloane Spencer has. There is not a single bad song on this compilation and with each listen a different song will become your favorite. I suggest you treat yourself to some great music and grab a copy of this album, listening to great music to help out a great cause; that is a win/win situation in anybody’s book.
