The 2011 WFA Women's Football Games to be played at Pennington Field, 1501 Central Dr., Bedford, Texas, 76022 on July 30, includes the All-American game in the morning (11 a.m.) and then the Championship game in the evening (7 p.m.). The All-American game will feature the All-stars from the 60 teams nationwide who are considered to be the best at their position. The Championship game in the evening will determine the Women's Football Alliance National Champion. That game features the Boston Militia, the National Conference Champions going up against our very own San Diego Surge, the American Conference Champion.
A look at San Diego’s opponent in that National Title game
Last week, the Boston Militia spanked the Indy Crash 46-18 at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, Massachusetts with nearly 900 of their backers in attendance. After winning the coin toss, it took the Militia just three plays to go 80 yards with the speedy WR Amy Saur scoring on a 50 yard pass from QB Allison Cahill. The extra point attempt was blocked. The Militia led 6-0 after just one minute and 35 seconds.
After kicking off, the Militia defense took over and stopped the Crash dead in their tracks to force a punt. Again, the Militia offense scored on a long pass, this one to WR Chante Bonds who outran the Indy defenders in a 50 yards foot race. After the snap for the extra point went askew, the Militia led 12-0.
Again, the Crash turned the ball over on downs. After taking possession on their own 42 yard line, the Militia decided it was time to give their defense a rest and went exclusively with their ground game. On the final play of the scoring drive RB Stacey Tiamfook took it across from 13 yards out. Tiamfook completed the demoralizing scoring drive by also scoring the two point conversion. With 5:15 left in the first quarter, the Militia led 20-0.
The Militia opened the second quarter with a rare fumble but the Crash failed to capitalize. The Militia scored again at the 11:01 mark on a one yard run by RB Whitney Zelee. The two point conversion failed. Militia led 26-0.
The Crash fumbled on their next possession and the ball was recovered by DE Jessica Cabrera at the Indy 32 yard line. The Militia then scored on a Cahill to WR Adrienne Smith pass. With the extra point, Boston led 33-0 with 7:55 left in the first half.
Then Boston got careless and the Crash scored at 7:29. The two point conversion failed. Militia led 33-6.
Again the Militia fumbled and this time it took the defense eight plays to stop the Crash. At that point, the Boston offense became more patient, utilized seven running plays and five passing plays and capped off their drive with a FB Dorothy Donaldson blast up the middle for touchdown number six. After the extra point failed, the Militia lead 39-6 with 29 seconds in the half.
The third quarter featured some fine defensive stops and Boston got the ball back after a fumbled snap recovered by LB Molly Goodwin. The Militia then proceeded to run off even more of the clock. On fourth down they attempted a field goal, that it was blocked.
The Crash then put together a nice drive which ended when DB Samantha Rush forced a fumble that was recovered by DB/WR Chante Bonds just before the end of the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter Goodwin intercepted an Indy pass on the 7th play of their drive and flipped the ball back to Mia Brickhouse who gained an additional 25 yards. This led to another Zelee touchdown run from 7 yards out. The point after by K Ashley Snyder made it 46-6 with only 10:04 left in the game.
After Boston began to substitute freely in the fourth quarter, the Indy Crash offense suddenly became world-beaters and put together two successive scoring drives to make the final score look more presentable 46-18.
Militia standouts on defense included: Mia Brickhouse with 10 tackles, 2 for a loss, 1 sack and one tipped pass; Molly Goodwin had 5 tackles, 1 for a loss, a sack, two interceptions, 1 pass tip, 1 forced fumble and 1 fumble recovery.
The defensive line of Nikita Payne, Jay Hodge, Jennie Brown, and Raxan English put pressure on the Indy quarterback the entire game.
San Diego will enter the championship game with an 11-0 record. They’re scoring at the rate of 56 points per game while holding opponents to just 7 ppg. Boston has a 10-1 record and they’re scoring at the rate of 45 ppg. and limiting opponents to just 13 ppg.
