Countdown to 9/9/09: Sega studios (Part 3)

Examiner presents a series of Sega-related articles in commemoration of the 10-year anniversary of the Dreamcast's launch in North America.

As previously reported, Sega's E3 2002 booth party brought together the heads of all their 2nd-party studios for a media meet-and-greet. It was only the second time all these developers were in the same vicinity (the first being E3 2001). As a playful incentive for the media guests, developer 'baseball' cards were handed out, which the studio heads were more than happy to sign.

Here is a brief rundown on two more of those studios:

United Game Artists, Inc. / (Former) President: Tetsuya Mizuguchi

Originally known as AM Annex (and then Sega-AM9), United Game Artists was responsible for (among other titles) Sega's music-oriented Dreamcast sleeper hits: Space Channel 5 Parts 1 & 2 and Rez. They were respectively ported to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox Live Arcade. Sega's internal restructuring in 2003 led to the shut down of UGA with the staff members transfered to Sonic Team.

UGA President (and eventual Chief Creative Officer) Tetsuya Mizuguchi followed his musical calling when he left Sega and formed Q Entertainment. Q has since designed the Lumines series as well as co-producing Ninety-Nine Nights and Gunpey. Currently Q Entertainment is developing a sequel to Ninety-Nine Nights and the Japanese edition of Rock Band.

OverWorks Ltd. / (Former) President: Noriyoshi Ohba

If any one studio can be credited for most of Sega's 8 and 16-bit console achievements, it would be OverWorks. Back then they were known as AM7 and Team Shinobi. Before Sonic, there was Alex Kidd, Sega's earlier mascot, whose games were developed by AM7. The studio went on to create the Golden Axe, Phantasy Star, Shinobi, Sakura Taisen, and Streets Of Rage series.

By the time the Dreamcast came out, the studio was not as prolific as Sonic Team or Smilebit but managed to create Skies Of Arcadia and briefly revived Shinobi. In 2004, OverWorks merged with Wow Entertainment to form Sega Wow. One of their recent critical successes was Valkyrie Chronicles.
