Phew! The hard days of improving conditioning and training are done. You're in the home stretch now. According to the Duvall Days Fun Runs' advice to runners, "Race-day can be broken up into three phases: The days just prior to the race, Race-Day preparation and Post race."
How you handle each of the phases will have a direct affect on your race experience and recovery."
In this fourth installment of "Countdown to 5K in 30 days," we'll focus on the week before your race. Here's what the experts at the Duvall Days Fun Runs recommend you do and don't do during the Pre-Race phase:
DO
- Cut training by approximately 50%. Any extra training this week is not likely to improve your performance during the event. Your last challenging workout should be no later than 3-4 days before the run.
- Rest when possible to let your body recover from all your hard work.
- Find out times and places for the Registration and Start.
- Study the course map. Races have been won & lost because of wrong turns.
DON'T
- Try to squeeze in extra workouts. Rest is more important.
- Try something new like shoes or the latest sport drink. Stick with what you’ve used during training.
