As you approach the end of 2013, take the time to reflect upon the blessings in your life. Blessings can be the obvious ones that are often taken for granted such as shelter, food, and water. Blessings can also be born from the adversities that are faced. It is from adversity that you may discover your inner strength, your need for God, and your need for change in your life.
When you find yourself stripped bare of everything that has given you security in the past, you will discover your need for God in your life. It is easy to cling to things on this earth because they give a sense of security. Some people cling to money, whereas others cling to relationships. Others may find themselves in the throes of drug or alcohol addiction, shopping addiction, or compulsive overeating. Despite the comfort you may find in these things, the comfort and security you find there are false. The only true security is the kind found in a relationship with God.
If you find yourself in a place of loneliness, God will be there to hold your hand. If you find yourself feeling sad, God will fill your heart with joy. If you find yourself lacking, God will supply your need. Your deficit is God’s opportunity to show his deep and abundant love for you.
“But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 37-39
As you begin 2014, take the time to reflect on your past blessings and make a commitment to start praising God for every blessing along the way…even those which are disguised as adversity.
