The day after the Virginia Beach City Council voted 9-1 to approve the construction of a mega mosque in a rural section of the city, Councilman Bill DeSteph claimed he has evidence linking the Muslim Brotherhood to the group building the mosque.
DeSteph, who provided the only "no" vote on the construction of the Crescent Community Center, says the mosque is being financed by the Islamic Center of Hampton Roads in Hampton, which allegedly has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Two trustees of the Hampton mosque, Jamal Badawi and Ahmad Sakr, have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, Richard Scott Saunders, leader of the Virginia Beach chapter of ACT! for America, charged in an email Wednesday.
DeSteph has reportedly passed the information on to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, claiming the mosque presents a threat to national security.
Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera has confirmed to local media that he has been in contact with federal authorities regarding the mosque, but would not comment further on the matter.
According to their website, the Crescent Community Center has raised $460,000 towards the project, or 82 percent of what is needed to complete the mosque.
Considering the fact that there are so few followers of Islam in Virginia Beach, that "Muslim" does not even show up in the city's latest religious demographics survey, it is hard to believe that at least a large portion of the money has not come from sources outside of the city (Though the Baha'i and Quaker religions did make the survey, with 133 and 3012 followeres, respectively.)
So, just where did the money come from?
