Due to the IOC decision, there is a possibility that football could be in a future Olympic Games. According to the Associated Press report, the sport could be included as early as the 2024 Olympic Games, which is the year the United States Olympic Committee is making a strong effort to bid for the Olympic Games. The United States have not hosted an Olympic Games since 2002 in Salt Lake City, which was best remembered for bribery and scandal.
Football is huge in the United States. According to Bob McCown of Rogers Sportsnet, there are more football players in the United States than ice hockey players worldwide.
However, the World Team, comprised of players from Canadian university football defeated the United States 35-29 in 2012 and Canada is also the defending champion of the under-19 IFAF World Championship. Canada beat the United States 23-17 in Austin, Texas on July 7, 2012.
The IOC decision on Tuesday does not mean that football will be in the Olympic Games. It just means the IFAF can put a bid together, with the hope that the IOC will give this much deserved sport full Olympic status.
