In a study conducted by Lauren Raine from the University of Illinois, children were found to perform better during memorization and improved learning capabilities. The study was done on 48 students at ages nine and ten. Over the span of three days, children that performed aerobic fitness throughout the day performed better in memory recall of learning materials than those who had little to no activity at all. What practical implementations does this study reinforce for our children?
1. Blood Flow - Increasing your physical activity throughout the day increases the flow of blood to your brain, which is what your brain needs in order to function correctly. It would stand to reason that any activity for any person regardless of their physical parameters would be able to increase cognitive abilities by increasing activity. Could something of this nature help children who have learning disabilities or suffer from ADHD? According to some researchers, it could. Experts at Michigan State University found that children with ADHD are less distracted in class after a quick session of physical activity.
2. Reinforced with Diet - As there are many brain enhancing foods, could regular aerobic exercise in combination with a healthier diet amplify the effects discovered by Lauren Raine? Theoretically, the process should. Foods are incorporated in the diets of various people who suffer from a wide range of debilitating diseases and affects. Specific foods are used to help prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease while others found that omega-3 fatty foods and anti-oxidants can help in reduction of ADHD behaviors while creating better focus. Combining the foods and exercise should vastly increase the child's thinking power if all of these scientists are correct.
3. Preventing Lethargy - Many people will exercise for no other reason than because it helps them feel good physically. Those who don't experience an active lifestyle are usually more lethargic and can become sick easily. Walking up a flight of stairs shouldn't wear one down to the point of passing out. A good overall feeling can help children and yourself stay focused and productive. In some cases, the person exercising could feel a great amount of elation from the activity. As our moods are subject to change caused by our physical feeling, keeping a routine of exercise could prevent ourselves and our children from becoming sloth-like and uncaring about our surroundings.
4. Emotional Status - School children can be cruel as they don't fully understand the ramifications of bullying someone about his or her weight. By keeping your child healthy and active, you can help them live a less stress filled life from those whom have nothing better to do with their time. Aside from the bullying, an obese child or person could grow to loath themselves causing a great deal of depression. Feeling good about your physical appearance is a great boon to self-esteem.
According to researchers and scientists, keeping your children fit has more benefits than simply fighting obesity. Regular exercise and a proper diet can also improve cognitive abilities as well as improve a general outlook on life. Although you don't need to provide a long and rigorous routine of exercise every day, 20 minutes of activity per day can do a great deal of good when it comes to the well-being
of your child.
