The Mount Royal University Cougars, based in Calgary, saw the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds qualify for the 2013 CIS Women's Volleyball Championship in Sherbrooke, Quebec next weekend.
On Thursday night, the Cougars lost in straight sets to the Thunderbirds, 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 in the Canada West women's volleyball semi-final at Vancouver's War Memorial Gym.
According to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport website, starting libero Lisa Barclay of Brandon, Manitoba led the Thunderbirds with 14.5 points and 11 kills. Abigail Keeping of Vancouver, British Columbia and Jessica von Schilling of Victoria, British Columbia had 11.5 points each while outside hitter Rosie Schlagintweit of Abbotsford, British Columbia had 11 points.
The University of Trinity Western Spartans, who knocked the University of Calgary Dinos last week, defeated the University of Alberta Pandas 25-20, 23-25, 25-12, 25-22 in the other semi-final to advance to the nationals.
The Pandas will now play the Cougars Saturday afternoon for the Canada West bronze medal game and the third and final playoff spot in the Canada West for the national championship.
