Cougars advance to Canada West Final Four in women's volleyball Friday

Last night was an historic evening for the University of Mount Royal Cougars athletic program. The Cougars who are relatively new to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport scene, as they only achieved university status in 2009, defeated the University of British Columbia-Okanagan Heat 19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 17-15 in five tough sets in women's volleyball action in Kelowna on Friday.

The Cougars defeated the Heat 2-0 in their best of three series in the Canada West quarterfinals. The Cougars were led by Calgary native Julia Pasieka, who had 15 kills.

The Cougars, who according to the Mount Royal Cougars website, won their first ever playoff series in women's volleyball at the CIS level, will now travel to Vancouver next weekend for the Canada West Final Four. The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and the University of Trinity Western Spartans have also qualified for the Final Four. The Spartans knocked out the University of Calgary Dinos by winning their best of three series 2-0 with a 22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-8 victory.

The University of Alberta Pandas lead the University of Manitoba Bisons 1-0 in their best-of-three series for the fourth and final Canada West Final Four spot.
