Cotto means business, as his battle with Pacman sways in the air
For days not many have been asking Miguel Cotto to put up his WBO welterweight title at a catchweight of 145 pounds and pay the $150,000 sanctioning fee so the event can be a championship fight and give Manny the opportunity to fight for a seventh world championship.
I have said it once and will say it again, world championships are nearly meaningless in the current boxing landscape and if Manny wants to fight for a welterweight championship, then both men should be allowed to fight within the normal limits of a welterweigt bout (147 pounds).
Now rumblings, including one from Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, are indicationg that if there is no title on the line, then maybe Manny should pursue a different fight.
To add fuel to the growing fire, Miguel Cotto has made it clear, he will not be bullied into a fight for his title below the welterweight limit.
"145 pounds is not a weight class. If the WBO does not like my decision, I will give them back their title. I have no problems with that," Cotto told Carlos Gonzalez of PrimerHora.
But Cotto went on to dictate the terms of a championship bout.
"If Pacquiao wants the fight to be for the title, it would have to be at the 147 pounds," said Cotto.
The unraveling of a serious fight, the sort of fight we have not seen since last years battle between Cotto and Antonio Margarito, all over a stinking belt that does not dictate anything.
Cotto and Pacquiao, get it together, fight at 145 pounds. Again, a championship will add no further glory to the action which will take place inside the ring between two of boxing's best warriors.

Cotto and his camp are idiots. You are going to get a 6million plus incentives which equates to 10 mill payday. Pacman can call this off altogether. When will Cotto get another chance at this. maybe 5-6 fights later and when he is alot older and that is a maybe.
He can go on and fight 10 fights to get the payday for one fight. Fight pacman and you get a 50/50 shot of winning and go on and get bigger paydays. If you fight 10 fighters, you get your face busted and possibly lose one or more of the fights. Your legacy is all but diminished. Cotto is not the "800 lb Gorilla here" Pacman is the Gorilla.

Agreed! Don't make this a worthless fight. If there's nothing to gain and nothing to lose then it's pointless. Its not like Cotto and Pacquiao are trying to move up the ranks. No belt, no fight!

I can't believe this is happening, all over two pounds, we may lose out on seeing this incredible match up because the Pinoy people have convinced Manny that he needs the belt to be recognized as the greatest fighter.

Cotto should be happy a small guy is going to make him a lot of money and fame (more than what he already has of course). He naturally has the advantage...he's going down 2 lbs and Manny is going up 5!!!Why can't he give in to that stupid belt...he didnt fight a quality fighter to get that belt anyway...if this fight does not happen, he's the loser and Mosley will be really happy 'coz Mosley knows how to play the game. Mosley knows he can beat manny regardless what weight they agree on. Even if he loses, his bank account wins. So its a win win situation for anyone to fight Manny as long as you make Manny happy.

Cypher, Cotto beat Mosley, mosley beat Margarito who beat Cotto (by cheating)...it does not matter. Whoever Pacman fights, it will make big money for anyone except Arum. He stands to make the most money having both cotto and pacman fight. Mosley was a lot more convincing fighting margarito and i honestly think (after the Clotty fight) that a rematch between Cotto and Margarito (without cement) will come out the same.
