Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs), defeated Delvin Rodriguez (28-7-3, 16 KOs) by knockout in round three, last night at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. Cotto vs. Rodriguez was the featured main event, presented by Top Rank, and televised on HBO Championship Boxing.
Miguel Cotto wasted no time as the first bell sounded, setting the tone for the scheduled twelve round bout. It was signature Cotto, delivering some amazing body shots to Rodriguez, together with some combinations delivered with speed and power.
In round two, Cotto displayed skills showing he is nowhere near being washed up, throwing a barrage of combination shots to the head and body of Rodriguez. A left hook by Cotto had Rodriguez dazed, but he managed to survive the round, a staggering Rodriguez was clearly hurt.
A determined and focused Cotto continued his deadly assault as round three began, throwing constant punches to the head and dropping Rodriguez to the canvas. The fight was ended by the referee 18 seconds into round three.
This fight was a pivotal fight for Cotto, many thought he was washed-up as far as his career goes. From the looks of his performance last night, Cotto has some game left and has once again proved he is a ring beast.
A re-invented Cotto, now trained by Freddy Roach has made the changes necessary to get back to the basics. Cotto is in great shape, and is at the top of his game physically, and mentally.
