This September is going to be a busy one for costumers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here’s a roundup of several different fun events you can wear your costumes to in the first half of the month.
This ball, sponsored by the Period Events & Entertainments Re-creation Society, is inspired by the classic movie “Casablanca.” The setting will be Rick’s Café. Music will be provided by Brassworks who will be playing hits of the era as well as the iconic song from the movie, “As Time Goes By.” Dancing will range from vintage Swing, to romantic waltzes, tangos and fox trots. Vintage or modern evening dress, 1930s or early 1940s costume, or Moroccan native dress will be admired, but not required.
ADSC Gatsby Summer Afternoon
Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate, Oakland, Calif.
The Art Deco Society of California’s annual Gatsby picnic is an elegant affair reminiscent of a scene from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, “The Great Gatsby.” It is like stepping back in time as everyone is in day wear from the 1920s and 1930s while they picnic, dance and enjoy the entertainment. There will be a fashion parade with prizes for best vintage outfits from among the ladies, gentlemen and children.
Residents of the historically recreated village of Fenford will be celebrating Michaelmas as they give thanks for a bountiful harvest before the coming of winter. Queen Elizabeth will be hunting with her courtiers including her Master of the Horse, the Earl of Leicester. You can immerse yourself in 1578 England by wearing costumes from the period. The faire is run by the Sebastopol Educational Foundation to raise funds for enrichment programs.
Northern California Renaissance Faire
Sept. 13-Oct. 12
Casa de Fruta, Hollister, Calif.
Northern California’s annual Elizabethan festival is a wonderful event where you can enjoy food, entertainment and shopping while wearing Renaissance outfits. There are theme weekends where you can come in Celtic, Pirate and Fantasy styles. There will also be costume contests with prizes in the Center Stage in the Food Court at 3:30 p.m. for historical costumes on Oct. 4 and for fantasy costumes on Oct. 11.
14th Annual Antique Autos in History Park
History Park, San Jose, Calif.
Presented by the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club and History San Jose, this event, the largest on the West Coast, is perfect for those who love antique vehicles and historical costuming. On display will be around 200 automobiles, fire equipment, bicycles and motorcycles from late 1800s through 1945. Guests are welcome to come in costume from any of these time periods.
Next time I will have more events for the second half of September. Stay tuned!
