The Inflatable Darth Vader and Incredible Hulk greeted visitors as they entered the convention floor. The Antlers Hilton and downtown Colorado Springs welcomed science fiction, fantasy, and horror enthusiasts to their annual GalaxyFest Convention this weekend, Feb 7-10. The weekend long event was a time for friends and family to revel with fellow nerds, steampunks, and superheroes. It was not only all for the fun, this convention was a fundraiser for the important charity called the Children’s Literacy Center. It is a non-profit that provides free one-to-one tutoring for children who need extra help. Guests could not help but notice the familiar sounds of chainmail rattling and belly dance scarves chiming. Also hard to miss were the LARPing sword battles that took place in the hallways, and of course, the beautiful smiles on the faces of children as they meet Darth Vader, Chewbacca, and R2D2.
The dealer’s room was impressive and filled with amazing collectables and toys. There were also fun and intricate sets on hand with which to have a picture taken. Up and down the hallways were talented writers and artists sharing their crafts. Although inflatable Darth had lost its air by Sunday morning, the convention was undoubtedly a wonderful way to get lost in another world for a day.
