Costume-Con is a yearly convention devoted to all things costume. For those of us that don't often stray into such colorful territory, this is a chance to get it all in digest form. The convention is on a bid system, and so changes cities each year. It's been as far away as Australia and England. Having it just a short flight away is a compelling reason to buy a membership and soak up the talent.
Costume-Con holds several contests throughout the weekend. These include such topics as the Historical Masquerade, Science Fiction and Fantasy, and Future Fashion Show. This year, they even held a Project Runway-inspired event where we designed and produced a look in the 18 hours before the convention started.
No matter what your skill level, you will find a bounty of inspiration and connection with costumers of all levels. Many of these fine folk are movers and shakers in the costuming world. You can take classes and workshops where you learn everything from leather work to beading—all things you can incorporate into your everyday sewing. You can even ask for a class that you have been looking for for ages, and chances are they will find someone to teach it. Chances are also that you will fall head-over-heels in love with the art, and the people who create it. See you in Denver!
As the Costume-Con 31 web site says, "Nothing starts the creative juices flowing in new paths like the intensive exposure to fresh viewpoints, techniques and enthusiastic dialog."
