Tampa, Florida pet owners will be facing higher costs in March if they want their pets to travel by air. They will also no longer be allowed to travel inside the cabin on some carriers, which can increase health risks for pets.
United Airlines is among those that will be requiring pets to travel as cargo, which can cost more than a thousand dollars, depending on the destination.
Animal rights advocates have a long standing argument against treating live animals as if they were luggage. The cargo compartments in airplanes can be subject to temperature extremes that can cause pets to become ill, and in some cases die. Pets have also been known to escape their containers when being loaded into airplanes, putting them at further risk for injury or loss.
Tampa area pet traveling on US Airways and Southwest will still be allowed to fly in the cabin with their owners.
