Costa Concordia, four more bodies found, one a child

Four bodies from Costa Concordia found in submerged part of ship

Top news here in San Francisco is about the Costa Concordia where four more bodies have been found. From Hunters Point to the soaring buildings of Pacific Heights, people have been talking about the Costa Concordia disaster.

"It's such a terrible tragedy," says San Francisco resident and cruise ship passenger, Belinda Foster.

"What a horrible situation. There is no happy ending to this story," says San Francisco resident, Donal Witham.

Now, news is coming through that one of the bodies just found is that of a little, five year old girl.

The bodies found were in a submerged area of the boat, says the BBC. The body of the little girl is believed to be that of Dayana Arlotti, from Rimini. She was holidaying on the boat with her father.

One official on the island of Giglio next to where the ship listed and sank told reporters that bodies had, indeed, been found, but she couldn't confirm how many there were.

She did say, however, that the bodies recovered are proving hard to identify.

"The bodies are in a state of decomposition after all this time in the water," said spokeswoman Francesca Maffini.

At one point, the search for bodies was called off  altogether (See that article here: SF learns: Costa Concordia search called off, bodies with life jackets found))

The Costa Concordia cruise ship, capsized on January 13th, 2012, killing 32 people with 13 said to be still missing, says the BBC News.

At one point, the purser had to be rescued by banging a pan on the wall (See that article here Costa Concordia purser rescue: banged pan on wall (photos, video) (See too the article on the 17th body being found SF news: Costa Concordia, 17th body found, fuel removal delayed (video)).

Around 2,300 tonnes of fuel is now being pumped from the cruise ship so that an oil spill does not become an environmental disaster.

Captain of the ship, Francesco Schettino, has been accused of manslaughter, of causing a shipwreck, and of abandoning ship. Schettino, reports the BBC, denies any wrongdoing.  He also denies that he left the ship early, before everyone was safely off (See that article here: Costa Concordia captain says did not leave ship early (photos, video))

During the panic, one couple called their friend to ask that he did not tell their daughter what was going on (See why with that story here: Italian cruise ship desperate calls: 'please don't tell my daughter about this')

The investigation is ongoing.
