Cosmic Atrophy is completing its second full-length album, Montis Ex Dementia, as we speak (write). However, we were fortunate enough to catch up with guitarist/vocalist Cory for a brief interview about the band and its status as they approach this milestone.
What influences the new direction for Cosmic Atrophy?
Some major influences for this change in stylistic and compositional direction would include Timeghoul (both demos), Morpheus Descends (especially Chronicles of the Shadowed Ones) and of course Demilich always has a special place for me, although there is less of an emphasis on that this time around.
How did you write your new track, and what inspired it?
My composition process might be a bit too boring to pontificate upon, I think. I tend to come up with a general mood and scene for each song I write, starting with a powerful motif which I expand upon. In this case, the main motif is actually the melody in the very beginning of the song (which also recurs throughout the album along with some others). The inspiration is all in the story.
Are you working on more material in this vein and when can we see it?
After this album I am going to take a short hiatus from Cosmic Atrophy to focus on some other projects of mine, like Demesne. There are way too many things I want to accomplish that I've already planned, and that doesn't leave me with much time. Once I am done with those future ventures, I will return to Cosmic Atrophy for a third album which of course will even further expand upon the essence of the band.
What are the most important death metal bands to you?
I don't know exactly what you mean by "important to me" (important in the global, evolution of the genre or important *to me* on a more personal subjective level?). But if I had to namedrop, I suppose I would say Master (US), Morbid Angel, Incantation, Nihilist (Swe) and Autopsy. Of course that is such a short, useless answer because it goes far beyond that, but I don't really have the energy or space for a full blown article!
Montis Ex Dementia will be released by Dark Descent Records.
