Canals have played a major role in Ohio's transportation history, especially in the 1800's. Canals can still be viewed in Northeast Ohio in the Cleveland area (Valley View) and down through Canal Fulton and Akron. Clevelanders can celebrate the rich history of the canals and canal boats at the annual Canal Festival in Coshocton, Ohio on Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10.
Coshocton Canal Festival Commemorating the first canal boat's landing more than 200 years ago in what is now Roscoe Village, this family-friendly 3-day event will offer a variety of fun activities for all ages. More than 4000 people are expected to attend.
Among the activities are a Fabulous 50's Car Show on Saturday ( 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.), a bike show, a quilt show and Queen and Princess pageants. Also this year, visitors can take part in the BPW Annual Cake Auction.
This year's Grand Parade (with a theme of "Reflections of Our Heritage") will take place on Saturday at 5 p.m. with marching bands, horses and floats and participants wearing 1800's canal era costumes.
A free concert will be offered on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. after the Grand Parade.
Throughout the Festival there will be a variety of craftspeople and food vendors offering their wares for purchase.
In honor of the Canal Festival, be sure to check out a ride on the horse-drawn Monticello III canal boat offering 40 minute narrated tours explaining the history of the Ohio canal system as it glides down 1.5 miles of the local canal at a speed of 4 MPH. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for youth (5-12).
Hours for the Coshocton Canal Festival are 4 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free and parking is free.
