Cory Denoncourt's snowbank accident on Wednesday in New York is nothing short of a tragedy. The 10-year-old passed away after he became trapped in snow that had fallen on top of him. Although a friend was with him, there was nothing they could do to save Cory from the weight of the snow, according to a Dec. 20 ABC News report.

Young Cory Denoncourt and a pal were playing outside a family apartment in Greece when things went terribly wrong. While building forts, a snowbank collapsed on top of the 10-year-old, causing him to be trapped underneath the weight of the ice shelf.

Kids nearby helped to pull Cory out of the heavy snow and adults soon arrived on the scene. Although he was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, he passed away from his injuries the next night.

A cause of death has not been released, but unconfirmed sources say the young boy complained of not being able to breathe while he was trapped.

Crisis and grief counselors are in place to support the late child’s friends and help them cope with the unfortunate incident.

The Cory Denoncourt snowbank death was a tragic accident, something no one saw coming. Still, police caution families to take extreme measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring by being vigilant in snow and ice. Furthermore, adults should supervise children when they are outside playing during the winter season.
